How to get your claim paid quickly
Date: 11 March, 2010
Insurance claims can be difficult to expedite for payment. To get a claim paid quickly, keep accurate records of each transaction, whether it is to a general practitioner or a specialist. Every medical facility is required by law and by insurance companies to maintain precise records. But documents to get misplaced or misfiled and having a true and accurate copy will serve to expedite a claim.
Advance the claims process by keeping in direct contact with the insurance company and providing them with documents if necessary. Should the insurance company need an item from the provider, phone the provider directly and obtain a copy. Much time can pass between document production and delays claim payment.
Should there be an unexpected delay, contact the insurance company directly and ask why the claim remains unpaid. In many instances, claim payments are delayed due to coding errors. If you are able to speak with a representative, have them explain exactly what it is they need to pay the claim. When claims are denied, there is typically an error in coding, filing of the wrong forms, or a failure to produce necessary documentation. By involving yourself in the process, it will speed-up the process.
Contact the provider as well as the insurance company to ensure they have complied with the insurance company’s procedure and have completed all necessary paperwork. This is not to say to call each and every day, but it does mean following-up and being thorough. Remain polite and courteous as the delay can be a combination of factors and does not reside with one person or office.
Familiarize yourself with your insurance literature. Be certain that you are contacting the right person(s) in the right department. The information contained in the brochures and guide is to provide you with information necessary to understand the process.
